Bonny Norton conference
15/04/2011
CPEC organized the conference "Hybrid identities and Language Learning" by Dr. Bonny Norton, distinguished professor and scholar from the University of British Columbia, Canada, on April 5th, 2011.
Abstract of Dr. Norton's Presentation:
In recent years, there has been increasing interest in
the relationship between identity and language learning, particularly in the
field of English language teaching. Such research is centrally concerned
with the relationship between the language learner and the larger social world,
and addresses the way language learning is influenced by institutional and
community practices in diverse sites of power. In her presentation, Dr. Bonny
Norton traces the trajectory of her research on second language identity,
focusing on research that is primarily concerned with classroom practice.
Central themes include debates on investment, imagined communities, identity
categories, and literacy practices. Data is drawn from a range of English
language classrooms internationally. The presentation concludes with an
examination of new directions of research on identity and language learning, including
the identity of the second language teacher, the second language teacher
educator, and the second language researcher.
