The “II Congress of the Americas: Understanding Canada. Education, Technology and the Teaching of Language to strengthen Democracy” will be hosted by the Centro Paraguayo de Estudios Canadienses (CPEC) in Asunción, Paraguay on August 19th and 20th 2011. The Congress will provide an open forum for professionals in the field of Education, Technology, and English Language teaching, to meet with colleagues who share similar interests, and to allow for the exchange of ideas and practical teaching experience. Renowned professionals from Canada and Canadianists will present, offering talks, workshops and papers.

The main objectives of this Congress are:

·         To promote future cooperative projects among participating research teams from the various countries.

·         To establish closer ties among researchers from the Americas by discussing and exchanging ideas on the relationship to the issues that will be approached in the conference.

·         To encourage the involvement of young researchers to make scientific-quality, innovative presentations.

·         To promote inter-disciplinary and international dialogue

·         To produce and disseminate information through publications and articles/interviews in the media, programmes, invitations and special events.

CPEC invites proposals for presentations from teachers, teacher-trainers, researchers, program administrators and materials writers. The following pages provide information about the types of presentation which the Congress will include, and about the procedures for making a proposal.

Types of Presentation:

a) Talk (60 minutes)

In a Talk, the presenter puts forward ideas related to an area of Education, Technology or the Teaching of English Language and discusses them. The ideas might be based on classroom experience, research or reading. Practical applications of the ideas would then be put forward to the audience, and approximately 15 minutes left at the end for questions and/or comments.

b) Workshop (90 minutes)

The longer time available for a Workshop is to allow the presenter(s) to engage the audience in activities which encourage them to explore the ideas put forward. So, the basic pattern of a workshop would be: opening presentation of the topic and ideas; activities for exploration of the ideas; discussion and reflection led by the presenter(s).

c) Panel Discussion (60-90 minutes)

A Panel Discussion consists of a group of 3-4 people who, in turn, put forward their thoughts on the topic they have chosen to discuss. Each panelist has 20 minutes. The final part of the session would be for questions and/or comments from the audience.

Making A Proposal

1.  Decide what your proposal will contain and the most appropriate type of presentation for it. If you intend to propose a ‘Panel Discussion’, contact others who you think might be willing and interested to join you on the panel, and secure their participation.

2.  Complete the enclosed Proposal Form (both sides). Some notes concerning the form itself:

·         if there is to be more than one presenter, please list all the names and make sure that the first name you list is the same as the contact name for the proposal. Please make sure to list surname first, followed by given names. ‘Professional affiliation’ is the name of the principal school / institution where the person works.

·         if your proposal is for a ‘Workshop”, indicate the maximum size of audience (this is because some workshops may be unmanageable with a very large audience). If you do not tick any box, we will assume there is ‘no limit’ to audience size.

·         make sure you indicate which equipment you will need for the presentation.

·         for the ‘Summary of Presentation’, make it as clear as possible to Congress participants what the contents of your presentation will be.

·         tick boxes to indicate which group or groups of people you think the presentation will interest. You may, of course, tick as many boxes as you feel appropriate. This information will help Congress participants choose what to attend.

·         keep biographical information brief, please.

3.  Send your complete presentation in advance.

4.  Send the completed proposal form of the abstract to the address given at the bottom of the proposal form. Your form and abstract must reach CPEC by Thursday, June 30th. Send it by e-mail, if possible, as an attachment, to: cpec@stael.edy.py or sruffinelli@stael.edu.py.

5.  We will acknowledge receipt of your proposal, by e-mail. We will also inform you of the size of room for your presentation.

Any questions about entering a proposal should be made to the address given at the end of the proposal form.
