Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) – First competition launched

The Government of Canada is pleased to announce the inaugural competition for its new scholarships, the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP).

ELAP is designed to support human capital development and new generations of leaders in the Americas while at the same time strengthening linkages between Canadian educational institutions and those in the region.

Online applications are now being accepted for scholarships beginning in the fall of 2009. The application deadline is June 29, 2009.

The scholarships will be mobilized through inter-institutional exchange agreements and will provide students with the opportunity to conduct study or research at Canadian universities and colleges. Recipients will remain students of their home institution during this exchange.

Canadian institutions are invited to apply online on behalf of prospective exchange students. The institutions may be represented by either the professor who will be supervising the student or by the mobility and exchanges manager.

A special feature of the new program: selected students will participate in a study tour to expose them to Canadian governance, business, and civil society in priority areas.

ELAP will award up to 1600 new scholarships over four years for Latin American and Caribbean students to pursue studies or research in Canada.

"This impressive program will permit a substantial number of students from across the hemisphere to gain educational experience in Canada," said Jennifer Humphries, Team Leader for the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada Scholarships at the Canadian Bureau for International Education. "We look forward to working with young leaders to hone their skills and enhance their knowledge in a range of areas: governance, peace and security, economic and trade policy, environment and more. And we encourage all Canadian universities and colleges to get information on this opportunity and to participate."

 Scholarships.gc.ca expands its reach

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) and the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) are pleased to announce the launch of an all-new www.scholarships.gc.ca.

The enhanced scholarships web site delivers timely, well-organized information to a global audience. In addition to comprehensive information on international scholarships offered by Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the site now includes the major awards offered by other Government of Canada agencies such as:

·         Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

·         Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)

·         International Development Research Centre (IDRC)

·         Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)

·         Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)

This information is of interest to Canadian and non-Canadian students, faculty and academic institutions.

“There is a multiplicity of awards offered by an array of different Canadian Government departments and units,” said Jennifer Humphries, Vice-President of Membership and Scholarships of CBIE and Team Leader for the DFAIT programs. “Now there is a one-stop shop for all major government international scholarships.”

Coming soon, users can subscribe to a Real Simple Syndication (RSS) feed for program news, media releases, and competition information. Further enhancements are ongoing, so users will benefit from frequent visits to the site to check out the latest developments.

Of course, given the volume of partners and programs involved, DFAIT and CBIE will be adding new programs and revised information on a regular basis. They urge visitors to be in touch with views and news that should be included.

Your suggestions and ideas are welcome - please contact webmaster@cbie.ca.
