Accompanied by the Executive Coordination Division and officials from Itaipu Technology Park (PTI), the Paraguayan side, a group of Canadian and local environmental professionals will begin this Sunday, May 16, several activities under the agreement "Conservation Centre" signed by Itaipu Binational and representatives of the University of Manitoba in Canada.
The Agreement, agreed by both parties in march 2009 and reiterated in september of that same year, provides de establishment of a “Conservation Centre” that will have as its main activity to elaborate and implement projects destined for the Environment (Environment Education) and – above all – to the development of neighboring communities of the influence zones of Itaipu. To this end, Dr. David Walker, the project leader, and the expert in community development-through-sustainable-tourism Amanda Huculak, both from Canada, and also Mr. Ian Jarvis from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, will seek - initially - to know the field where the plan will be implemented. The overall project coordinator, Dr. Juan José Aveiro Talavera, said everything is already regulated to be the kickoff to the work and only missing a few meetings with the directors of Itaipu, to establish the financial outlay by the Binational, in addition to redefining some terms of the agreement.
“These activities are the ones that will be related to that field. The canadian delegation will seek to have the appropriate information to be able to elaborate a plan for community development”, he says.
Dr. Aveiro manifested that he had been conversing with leaders from various Indian Groups (from Hernandarias and Itakyry), to whom it was informed about the future jobs that eventually be performed along the foreign experts.
Besides these activities, Mr. Ian Jarvis from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada will present a proposal from the Canadian Government to Itaipu, so that Paraguay can engage in an agricultural crop monitoring program.
Aveiro manifested that such an enterprise has taken place in China, Argentina, MĂ©xico and Canadá, and that Paraguay wants to be part of this group. “We're going to be having meetings with the Universidad Nacional del Este (UNE), with the Facultad de AgronomĂa, to explain to them (or their managers) what this project consists of, and that it'll be a great improvement for the country”, said.
