Luigi Iannacci Conference

02/05/2011

CPEC organized the following conferences by Dr. Luigi Iannacci:

“A Critical Examination of Pathologizing Processes in Language and Literacy Education”

This presentation examines what is possible for young children when their language and literacy learning addresses their assets and is organized in ways that expand their identity options. A critical discussion of the processes and practices that contribute to the pathologization of students learning additional languages is also offered. Literacy curricula Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) students experience is specifically examined to highlight the nature and impact of patholigization. Research currently in progress that examines how patholigization impacts teachers will also be discussed.

"Reconceptualising Assessment in Early Childhood Education (ECE): Pedagogical Documentation and Asset-oriented Ways of Understanding Children's Literacies"

This presentation examines the current state of assessment in ECE. As such, dominant and problematic practices and notions that currently limit how children's literacies are understood and assessed will be critically explored in order to provide context and counter points to these practices and discourses. A subsequent exploration of pedagogical documentation and asset-oriented ways of positioning children will then be offered with specific emphasis on assessment practices that can help early childhood educators identify the various funds of knowledge children posses in order to fully and effectively document their developing literacies within the context of English as a second language instruction.
